Over 60 Suspects Arrested in Kampala Crime Crackdown

Detectives from the Kampala Metropolitan Police have carried out a series of operations targeting street crime, leading to the arrest of several suspects linked to theft, robbery, and other criminal activities across Kampala.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the operations were conducted on 19 and 20 May 2026.

In Kisugu, Makindye Division, police arrested a suspect identified as Menya Farouk in connection with the theft of the front and rear number plates of motor vehicle registration number UBR 185M, a Toyota Noah. The stolen number plates were later recovered from a nearby rubbish heap where they had reportedly been hidden.

In a separate operation conducted in the Nsambya, Lukuli, Kansanga, and Gogonya areas under Kabalagala Police Division, police arrested 12 male suspects from crime-prone locations where members of the public are frequently attacked and robbed of bags, mobile phones, and cash.

Another operation in Kisenyi and Nabunya under Old Kampala Police Division led to the arrest of 57 suspects believed to be involved in phone snatching, robbery, and narcotics-related crimes. Of these, 32 suspects were arraigned before court today, while others were cautioned and released after screening or remain in custody pending further action.

Owoyesigyire said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve public safety within the Kampala Metropolitan area.

Police have urged the public to continue sharing information that may help identify and apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities.
