Over 100 Arrested as Police Raid Criminal Hideouts in Kampala
Police in the Kampala Metropolitan area have arrested several suspects during a series of operations targeting criminal hideouts, black spots, and individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities.
In the Kira Road policing area, specifically Mulimira and Kyebando, an operation led by the Divisional Police Commander resulted in the arrest of 31 suspects. They are currently detained at Kira Road Police Division pending screening and fingerprinting.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, a patrol team in Ntinda intercepted a group of suspected criminals in Kigowa. The suspects fled the scene, abandoning weapons and housebreaking tools, including pangas, hammers, iron bars, sticks, and jerrycans containing suspected fuel. Two suspects were later arrested while hiding in a residential garage.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the group was allegedly planning arson attacks linked to a land dispute. Inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
In Nateete’s Kanaala Zone, one suspect was arrested in possession of four suspected stolen motorcycles and multiple number plates. He remains in custody as authorities verify ownership of the recovered items.
Meanwhile, in Entebbe, particularly Bunono and Guda, police arrested 31 suspects during operations targeting theft, burglary, and vandalism. The suspects have since been charged and are awaiting court proceedings.
In Kasangati Division, covering Wampewo Ward, Gayaza, and Kijabijjo, more than 47 suspects were arrested from betting centres and known criminal hideouts.
Police also arrested two suspects in Kijabijjo for allegedly operating an illegal garage used to dismantle suspected stolen motorcycles. Several motorcycle parts, number plates, and vandalized components were recovered.
Owoyesigyire noted that some criminal elements are increasingly using betting centres, unfinished buildings, and makeshift structures as hideouts. He said ongoing operations are targeting such developments.
He added that all suspects remain in custody pending screening and possible court action. Police say the operations are part of continued efforts to curb crime and enhance public safety across the Kampala Metropolitan area.
