Mother Arrested Over Alleged Murder of Two-Year-Old Child

Police in Kabale have arrested a mother accused of murdering her own child and dumping the body in a stream.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate, the suspect, identified as Akankwasa Silvia, was seen by residents on Thursday evening and Friday morning without her two-year-old child, raising suspicion among locals.

Concerned residents reported the matter to the LC1 Chairperson, Stella Samaki, who asked the suspect to explain the whereabouts of the child. However, the suspect reportedly failed to provide a clear explanation.

Residents later launched a search and discovered clothes believed to belong to the child dumped in a latrine at the suspect’s residence. The chairperson subsequently reported the matter to Kabale Police.

The suspect was arrested and, during interrogation, allegedly confessed to killing the child and dumping the body in a stream in Butobere.

A team comprising Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), homicide detectives, and the fire brigade, led by the District Criminal Investigations Department (DCID) officer, responded to the scene and recovered the body of the juvenile from the water.

The body was retrieved and taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Maate said investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the alleged murder.
