Residents, passersby fight off armed robbers who attacked shopkeeper in Jinja City

Police in Kiira Region has recovered an AK-47 rifle which is believed to have been dropped by suspected robbers at a shop belonging to Victory Kabenge in the Church zone cell in Northern Jinja City division.

According to Kiira Region police spokesperson, James Mubi, detectives also recovered an undisclosed number of bullets left behind by the robbers.

Three armed robbers traveling in a numberless Ipsum vehicle allegedly surrounded Kabenge’s retail shop on Tuesday and directed him to hand over all the money in his possession.

The victim made an alarm attracting crowds of passers-by, who physically confronted the robbers using big sticks forcing them to dump the gun at the shop and flee for dear life.

Eyewitnesses describe the suspects as three tall dark-skinned men.

Kabenge noted that he bravely held one of the suspected robbers by the neck as he shouted for help, and the passers-by courageously roughed up the suspects but they managed to getaway.

Mubi says that inquiries are underway.
