Panic in Luweero as gunmen attack, rob Mobile money vendor
Fear and grip rocked residents of Kiwanula trading center in Luweero district as two gunmen raided the area, fired live bullets and robbed a mobile money shop.
According to residents, the thugs raided a mobile money shop belonging to one David Kalungi at around 8:00 pm on Sunday night and took off with Shillings 5.5million, 33 mobile phones and phone accessories worth millions of Shillings.
Kalungi says that the thugs attacked as he was planning to close the shop and fired several live bullets in the air to scare residents who run into their houses thinking it was police enforcing the nighttime curfew.
The robbers placed him at gunpoint and ordered him to surrender all the cash as well as the phone with the float balance.
Residents argue that officers from Mazzi Police Post, which is about two kilometers away from the scene arrived 40 minutes later, citing transport challenges.
Erastus Kibirango, the LC 5 Chairman of Luwero District has condemned the attack and promised to engage the Resident District Commissioner to find ways of curbing the rising robberies and theft in the area during curfew time. Kibirango says that there is need to increase patrols in the area as well as vigilance by residents to fight such cases.
Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Isah Ssemwogerere says investigations are ongoing, adding that police are already hunting for the robbers.
