63-year-old woman arrested for stealing newborn baby in Soroti

Police at Soroti CPS is holding a 63-year-old woman identified as Aketch Joyce a resident of Kobwin village in Ngora District for stealing a five-day-old baby boy.

According to Asp Ageca Oscar Gregory the PRO East Kyoga, it is alleged that on the 28/01/2022 at around 1200 noon at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, a newborn baby boy of five days was taken by the suspect who had been at the same facility for three days on the pretext that she was a caregiver to a patient.

The baby’s mother only identified as Asege gave birth by C-section. The suspect took advantage of her condition by deceiving that the child’s grandmother had sent her for the baby. However, she disappeared with the infant.

The matter was immediately reported to Police who led by the DPC and CCTV monitoring Team tracked the suspect up to Kobwin Village in Ngora district where she was arrested.

Ageca applauded the family and hospital administration for informing the police very fast, which allowed for the tracking and arrest of the suspect and consequent recovery of the baby.

“We, therefore, urge the public to immediately inform the police if and when you think your child has been abducted, kidnapped, stolen or you think they are in immediate danger. Please inform the police or Call 999 or 112” said Ageca.

The suspect has been charged with the offense of child stealing and is being held at Soroti CPS.
