104 road crashes occurred from 30th December 2022 to 1st January 2023 leading to 35 deaths and 114 injuries.
According to Faridah Nampiima the PRO Traffic and Road Safety, 28 accidents were fatal, 49 were serious and 29 were minor, leaving behind 149 victims.
2 drivers died and 6 sustained serious injuries, 10 motorcycle riders died and 27 sustained serious injuries, 4 motorcycle passengers died, 26 sustained injuries and 1 pedal cyclist was killed. 4 passengers in buses were killed and 28 were seriously injured, 9 pedestrians were also killed and 17 sustained injuries. 5 people died in other vehicles and 10 sustained serious injuries.
Nampiima says that motorcycle riders account for the highest number of deaths followed by pedestrians and then passengers in other vehicles.
She attributes this to reckless driving (76 crashes), careless driving (12 crashes) and 12 hit and runs. 1 person also died from jumping off the vehicle, 1 careless pedestrian, and 2 fatal crashes were due to speeding.
“When it comes to KMP area, we registered 10 fatal, 21 serious and 18 minor crashes and upcountry, we registered 18 fatal, 28 serious and 9 minor accidents. We have 3,175 traffic offenders arrested and issued with EPS tickets on various traffic offences across the country,” says Nampiima.
She urged all road users to be vigilant and avoid reckless driving since it is the major cause of crashes.
