Two Arrested in Kasese for Possessing Hippopotamus Remains

Officers at Kasese Central Police Station (CPS) have arrested two suspects found in possession of the physical remains of a hippopotamus, a protected animal species.

The suspects, identified as Mumbere Patrick (24) and Mumbere Robert (21), were apprehended at their home in Kahendero Cell, Muhokya Sub-county, Kasese District, with suspected hippopotamus meat.

According to SP Nelson Tumushime, the spokesperson for Kasese Police, the arrest followed suspicions raised by the local community. Around 7:00 PM, concerned residents alerted security personnel, who swiftly responded and arrested the two individuals.

A search of their house led to the recovery of two heads, suspected to be from a hippopotamus, along with other wildlife meat stored in a sack.

“The suspects were handed over to Kasese CPS, and our detectives are working diligently to ensure they are arraigned in court to face the charges against them,” said Tumushime.

He cautioned residents against illegally entering the national park, emphasizing that such actions violate the law. He further warned that possessing wildlife from a protected species is illegal under the Uganda Wildlife Act. Residents are advised to seek proper authorization from the Uganda Wildlife Authority before accessing the park.
