Police Investigating Mob Lynching of Alleged Thief in Kanungu District

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Niwampire Denis, a 24-year-old resident of Nyamugari Cell, Mafuga Parish, Rutenga Sub-county in Kanungu District. Denis was lynched by a mob, allegedly for stealing Irish potatoes.

According to Elly Maate, the Public Relations Officer for the Kigezi Region, it is alleged that the deceased, who was known as a habitual thief, had been missing from his home for about a month. His disappearance was reportedly linked to his habit of stealing from people’s homes and gardens, prompting fears of arrest.

It is reported that he had been hiding in Mafuga Central Forest Reserve, where he maintained a small Irish potato garden. On January 26, 2025, at around 11:00 a.m., he was spotted stealing Irish potatoes from a nearby garden belonging to Maama Powel, a resident of Kerere Village in Rubanda District.

Residents seized him, and he was subsequently lynched.

The police were notified, visited, and documented the crime scene. A postmortem examination was conducted at the scene. The deceased’s body was later handed over to his relatives for a proper burial.

No arrests have been made, and no exhibits have been recovered so far.
