Police Arrest Security Guard Driver Over Suspected Government Stores

Police in the Kampala Metropolitan area have arrested a 36-year-old man for the unlawful possession of suspected government stores following an intelligence-led operation in Kawempe Division.

The suspect, Prosper Turinawe, a driver attached to a private security company and a resident of Kyebando Central, was arrested on 21st June 2026 after police received information about a man allegedly seen carrying a pistol along Mawanda Road.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, officers from Wandegeya Police Station mounted an operation and established that the suspect had been staying at a lodge in the area. Although he initially evaded arrest, further intelligence led to his interception at about 6:00 a.m. while in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition.

A subsequent search of his residence in Kyebando Central led to the recovery of approximately 40 spent cartridges of different calibres, black military-style boots, uniforms belonging to a private security company, and other uniforms from various organisations. The recovered items were exhibited as evidence.

The suspect is currently in police custody and has been charged with possession of government stores. Preliminary findings indicate that the premises he occupied may have been used to store the recovered items.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the exhibits and trace the firearm, which remains unaccounted for.

Owoyesigyire said the suspect will be produced in court upon completion of the investigations.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
