Woman Arrested Over Alleged Theft of Cousin’s Three-Month-Old Baby
Police at Kira Division have recovered a three-month-old baby boy who had been reported stolen from Kireka D Cell, Kireka Ward, Namugongo Division, Kira Municipality in Wakiso District.
According to SP Racheal Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, it is alleged that on 4th May 2026, Amongin Brenda visited the home of her cousin, Akunyo Sarah, after travelling from Kalaki District. She reportedly informed the family that she had come to process her National ID under the express service.
On 5th May 2026 at around 2:00 PM, the mother of the baby briefly stepped outside, leaving the child asleep in the house. Upon her return, she discovered that the baby was missing and that the suspect had also disappeared.
Following coordinated police efforts, the suspect was tracked and arrested on 6th May 2026 in Soroti District. The stolen baby was also safely recovered.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect had allegedly misled her husband into believing she was pregnant. Kawala said that on 2nd May 2026, the suspect reportedly asked her husband for money, claiming she needed to travel to the hospital for delivery.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges related to child theft.
Police say arrangements are underway to reunite the baby with the family.
