31-Year-Old Man Held for Assaulting 64-Year-Old Woman to Death

Police in Rukiga District have arrested a 31-year-old man, Bosco Byaruhanga, a resident of Kakamba Cell, Kibanda Parish, Kamwezi Sub-County, in connection with the alleged assault of a 64-year-old woman, Vastine Zabanita, who later died from her injuries.

The incident reportedly occurred on 12 May 2026 at around 00:40 hours at the same address.

According to ASP Elly Maate, the Public Relations Officer for the Kigezi Region Police, it is alleged that the deceased went outside her home to relieve herself at about 00:40 hours. Shortly afterward, her two sons, Naturinda Amos and Arinda Saul, heard her fall and raised an alarm.

When the boys rushed to assist her, the suspect allegedly picked up a stone and threw it toward them. Their alarm attracted neighbors to the scene. It is further alleged that the suspect then took the victim to his house, where he continued assaulting her before neighbors intervened.

The area Chairperson, Mr. Tusiime Enock, together with other residents, transported the victim—who had sustained serious injuries—to Kamwezi Health Centre for medical attention, and the matter was reported to police.

However, despite efforts to save her life, the victim was pronounced dead on 12 May 2026 at approximately 13:30 hours.

Police officers from Kamwezi Police Station visited the scene, documented evidence, and recorded statements from witnesses. The suspect was subsequently arrested and is currently in custody.

The body of the deceased remains at Kamwezi Health Centre pending a postmortem examination.

ASP Maate urged members of the public to refrain from acts of violence and lawlessness, warning that anyone who commits such offenses will face the full force of the law.
