Man Dies Following Mob Beating Over Alleged Theft of Irish Potatoes in Rubanda

Police in Rubanda District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 30-year-old man, Bruno Tumukunde, who was reportedly lynched by a mob following allegations of theft.

Tumukunde, along with 23-year-old Rogers Katusiime, both residents of Matakara Village, Ikamiro Parish in Muko Sub-County, allegedly broke into a storage facility belonging to Adoniya Zikereta on May 14, 2025, and stole eight bags of Irish potatoes valued at UGX 1.8 million.

According to police, a report was made to ASP Mahiirane Vincent, the Officer in Charge of Muko Police Station, at around 11:20 PM, indicating that two suspects had been apprehended by residents and were being beaten.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, stated that officers responded promptly and managed to rescue the two individuals. They were initially taken to Muko Butare Health Centre for medical attention, but the attending nurse reportedly declined to admit them, citing safety concerns related to possible retaliation by members of the community.

While arrangements were being made to transfer the suspects to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, Tumukunde succumbed to his injuries en route.

Police have opened two case files—one for store-breaking and theft, and another for murder by mob action. Investigations are ongoing.

The eight bags of Irish potatoes were recovered by the complainant and residents. Tumukunde’s body was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The second suspect, Katusiime, was released on police bond to his mother to facilitate continued medical care.

ASP Maate condemned the act of mob justice and urged the public to respect the rule of law. “Individuals suspected of committing crimes should be reported and handed over to the police, not subjected to violence,” he said.
