Kampala on high alert as security agencies investigate recent explosions

Security agencies have issued a cautionary alert, urging the public to exercise vigilance in the wake of two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) detonating—one in Kikubamutwe parish (Kabalagala) and another in Nabweru Kibwa (Nansana municipality).

Deo Akiiki, the Deputy Defence spokesperson, disclosed that these explosives are mechanical timer bombs. The IED in Nabweru was reportedly brought by two young men on Saturday, December 2, 2023. After renting a room and providing a three-month payment, they left a bag in the room, which subsequently exploded.

Akiiki elaborated that the IED in Kabalagala was placed on the veranda of a house in a busy street. Fortunately, there were no casualties in either incident.

“Investigations are ongoing, and the general public is urged to remain vigilant and security-conscious, especially as we approach the Christmas and New Year festivities. Citizens are advised to implement security measures, particularly in crowded places such as bus/taxi parks, places of worship, discos, parties, lodges, and bars,” stated Akiiki.
