Five confirmed dead in Mbale floods

Five people have been confirmed dead following heavy rains that hit areas around Mt Elgon and it’s slopes. The rains happened throughout was experienced throughout the night of 30 – 31/07/2022.
Some rivers burst the banks causing destruction of crops whose value is yet to be established.
Rogers Taitika the Elgone region PRO says Nabuyonga bridge located along Mbale – Kumi road at Nabijjo cell, Namakwekwe ward, Northern Division – Mbale City was over flooded due to the filling of river Nabuyonga, sweeping two cars with unknown number of occupants that were trying to cross the road.
So far five (05) dead bodies have been retrieved and Seven people rescued. Four of the deceased persons have been identified as Tamunoza Doreen 24 years, Namukhula 15, Khalayi 13 and Masaba Ayub 30. One is yet to be identified. All bodies have been handed over to Mbale City Mortuary, pending postmortem.
According to Taitika, Police and red Cross teams are still carrying out search and rescue to find victims that may have been swept away by the floods.
