Fire Guts Workshops in Mukono, Property Worth UGX 100M Destroyed
Police in Mukono are investigating a fire outbreak that occurred today, 15th April 2026, at about 7:20 a.m. in Kiwanga–Lwanda Cell, Nantabulirwa Ward, Goma Division, Mukono Municipality.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), the fire started at Birimuye Metal Workshop (welding section) and spread to a neighbouring timber workshop along the Kampala–Jinja Highway. Preliminary eyewitness accounts suggest that the fire may have originated from sparks caused by a faulty electrical connection.
Police officers from Coca-Cola Police Post, together with the Mukono Fire Prevention and Rescue Services from headquarters, responded promptly and successfully contained and extinguished the fire.
Owoyesigyire said that during the operation, traffic along the Kampala–Jinja Highway was temporarily disrupted for about 30 minutes, as vehicles were diverted to alternative routes, causing brief congestion that has since normalized.
“Significant property damage was recorded, particularly in the timber workshop. Items destroyed include carpentry machines, finished timber products, door frames, tables, and other assorted materials, with an estimated loss of UGX 100 million. No injuries or fatalities were reported,” he added.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Owoyesigyire urged the public to ensure proper electrical installations and safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
