Police Recover AK-47 at Tausi Bus Terminal, Suspect on the Run

Police in Old Kampala have recovered a firearm at Tausi Bus Terminal in Bukesa Parish, Kampala Central Division.

According to SP Racheal Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the incident occurred on 14th April 2026 at about 5:00 a.m. A bus conductor, while loading passengers onto a bus bound for Mbarara, was approached by an unidentified passenger who requested to have his luggage transported.

As part of routine checks, the conductor asked the passenger to open the bag for inspection, but he declined. The refusal raised suspicion, prompting the conductor to physically inspect the luggage. During the check, he felt an object resembling a firearm and immediately alerted authorities.

Kawala said a police task team swiftly responded to the scene, and upon inspection, recovered an AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine and no ammunition. The weapon had been concealed in a white polythene bag, which was further packed inside a bag locally known as a “usofia.”

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Police say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend him as investigations continue.
