Ohhh! Yes, we are talking about the real music legends; Afrigo Band and Awilo Longomba who have promised to deliver a never-seen or heard-before show, a perfect blend of Soukous, Rumba, Afro-Pop and all in one, and more to that, Afrigo band will not only be playing their timeless hits but as well do magic to Awilo’s hits, incredible, right? Well, you will all love it!

According to Talent Africa, the leading events management and entertainment company, the first edition of Legends of Sound, which is now going to be an annual event aimed at bringing together legendary acts from Uganda and the world to showcase the rich tapestry of iconic music, will be happening on the 5th of August 2023 at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel gardens in Kampala. And to put it right and just as everyone had thought this is not a-one-off concert.

This year, Legends of Sound celebrates the remarkable 48-year journey of Afrigo Band and they thought it wise to team up with Awilo Longomba who as well understands and appreciates their style of music.
Afrigo Band established way back in 1975 and went all out to become the most popular and iconic band and still is, well known for their exceptional contribution to the Ugandan music scene, and the whizzes of African Rumba, Jazz and Kidandali special, will be doing justice to their classics ranging from ‘Obangaina,’ ‘Mundeke’ all the way to ‘Teri Mubi’ among others.

While letting loose to the media about the concert, Talent Africa boss Aly Allibhai said, “I am excited to officialy launch this show ‘Legends of sound’ and we will be producing the show, we engaged with Awilo and Afrigo on how best we can do the show and I am very delighted be the one managing and producing it.

Legends of Sound will definitely become an annual show. This whole idea was inspired by Afrigo band as part of their 48year anniversary celebration and they thought Awilo, another legendary would even make it better. It feels great to have a pan-African collaboration, we are super happy to have this kind of arrangement. It’s gonna be a premium experience like never before, revelers will have a great experience to feel the real sound and have an interaction with the legends themselves.”

Asked about how the music trends have changed and whether the quality of production is any better than what it used to be way back in the 90’s and early 200’s, Moses Matovu, the founder of Afrigo band told Kampala Sqoop’s Emuk Benjamen that Music hasn’t changed but rather improved technology which he said plays a significant role in the music scene.

“I wouldn’t want to say that music has changed, it’s just the technology that has changed for the better, we now have complicated and good instruments right in different computer applications which wasn’t the case years back. And on production, yes, I strongly believe that we have great enthusiastic and hard-working producers in Uganda but I want to put it clear that we can only work with those who have real mastered the art of production and those who understand what we want and how exactly it should be done.”

On the band’s incredible overwhelming journey and why they decided to partner with Talent Africa as the show’s official producers, Matovu revealed that, “The story of Afrigo’s journey is a bit long but briefly, we have to celebrate this milestone. We believe working with talent Africa will make this anniversary better than any other shows we have ever done and I am optimistic that they will pull it out than any other events company. And just so you know, Afrigo means, Africa go to the world musically and I guess you can now relate better as to the reason we partnered with Talent Africa.”

Matovu went on and on to talk about copyright law which does not favor artists in Uganda to not being recognized by the government of Uganda and left the podium not without citing the fact that Ugandan artists do not enjoy their fruits of their sweat from the music they do and only have to rely on concerts to be able to get money never mentioning different music platforms that could actually bring in benefits to the artists.

Another member of the Afrigo band group Joanita Kawalya preached the gospel of discipline to the artists and as well, reminded them to take music seriously as a job, never undermining what it brings on the table.
“All Ugandan artists must know that music is not a joke but rather a job and they should all take it seriously, and another thing, it takes discipline for one to prosper musically.”

Awilo Longomba, an Afro-pop legend known for his energetic performances and infectious beats, on his side expressed his excitement about collaborating with Afrigo Band on the show and promised nothing short of action filled great musical performance between him and Afrigo, one he described as the biggest bad of all time in Uganda.

“I am very excited to be associated with Afrigo band. Afrigo band was and is still the best and biggest band in Uganda. The fusion of the kind of music they do makes me more attracted to them, the more and I must say it’s such a great honour to be working with them on their concert as they celebrate the great millstone they have moved all those years.

Awilo would later on heap praises on Afrigo band and never missing to complement them for the great work done over the years and that, “Government of Uganda needs to celebrate Afrigo band for the good work done in lifting the country’s flag high and should therefore, be recognized and honored for their great contribution to the Country.

The ’Coupe Bibamba’ hitmaker also advised young artists and music consumers to always look back to old music which he said preserves the African different cultures. Awilo said talking alone would not make the music lovers understand what’s in for them but rather urged them to turn up and feel the real extremely unforgettable show it will be! Come 5th August as they deliver what he termed as ‘a very special fusion’ between Awilo and Afrigo band.”
