64-year-old Yonasi Kwitegeka arrested over alleged aggravated defilement in Kanungu
The police in Kanungu have arrested a 64-year-old man identified as Yonasi Kwitegeka, alias Swenkuru, a resident of Rwenyerere cell, Biwomborwa parish, Kihihi town council, Kanungu district, for allegedly defiling two girl children aged 7 years and 9 years respectively.
According to Elly Maate, the PRO Kigezi Region, it is alleged that, in May 2026, at Rwenyerere cell, the victims were sent to the home of the suspect in the neighbourhood to collect passion fruits.
Instead, the suspect defiled them, allegedly promising to give them money. The suspect is alleged to have defiled them more than three times on different days.
Yonasi Kwitegeka threatened the victims after each incident not to tell their mother or he would hurt them. It wasn’t until their health condition worsened that the children’s mother got concerned, and they narrated to her how the suspect had always defiled them and promised them money.
This prompted her to open a case against the suspect at Kihihi police station, and he was accordingly apprehended.
Maate calls the incident unfortunate, noting that a person of such age, locally referred to by children as swenkuru, who is supposed to advise and provide safety and protection of the young ones against sexual abuse, is the one involved in committing such an offence against them.
Inquiries are ongoing, and upon completion, Maate says the suspect will be produced before the court of law to answer charges accordingly.
