6 girls give birth during UCE as Examinations near e
The Uganda National Examinations Board, UNEB says they are grateful to the Ministry of Education and Sports for allowing the Board to register pregnant learners for examinations this year.
Jennifer Kalule-Musamba Principal Public Relations Officer UNEB told the press in Kampala on Monday, that 6 mothers have so far given birth.
“While we are yet to get the total number of pregnant candidates that have sat for the examinations, reports indicate that a number of them have braved the odds and sat for the examinations” Kalule said.
Five of these mothers have been able to continue with the examinations. One mother had a still birth, but was able to come back and continue with the examinations.
“We hail them for the exhibiting this strong and brave spirit. We have a number of breast-feeding mothers who either leave their babies at home, or come to school with their care takers. For purposes of confidentiality, we will not disclose their identity now” Kalule said.
Meanwhile, Kalule says there have been no major reported cases of examinations malpractice so far, except for a few isolated incidences.
She added that, they have received reports of a few cases of examinations malpractice related to smuggling of unauthorized materials into the examination rooms, especially for the practical examinations.
“Statements have been made with police and investigations are under way. In another incident, two people were found vending fake examination papers at one school around Kampala. Investigations are under way” she said.
Kalule added that in West Nile, a candidate attempted to commit suicide after sitting for Mathematics, but was rescued. Unfortunately, he has not been able to continue with the examination, and is hospitalized.
Today marks the beginning of the 3rd week of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) Examinations. Candidates started with History Ppr. 1 on Monday morning, and are writing History Prs 2, 3 & 4 in the afternoon.
