Rukungiri- Husband Arrested for Alleged Murder of Wife

Police in Rukungiri have arrested a 54-year-old man, James Kashaija, for the alleged murder of his 44-year-old wife, Enid Ndyomuhyenyi. The incident took place on 03/04/2024 around 23:00 hours at their residence in Rwanama village, Kahoko parish, Nyakishenyi sub-county, Rukungiri district.

Elly Maate, the PRO for the Kigezi police region, told reporters that they received a report from Twinamatsiko Phenehans, alleging that on 03/04/2024 around 23:00 hours, James Kashaija returned home from a social evening at Omukikona trading centre. Upon arrival, he woke his wife and accused her of being drunk.

In response, she mentioned that he also consumed alcohol, which further aggravated him. Kashaija then removed his black gumboots and used them to assault her on the chest and back. Subsequently, he forcibly pulled her off the bed, placed her on the floor, and retrieved an old piece of timber, which he used to inflict injuries on her legs, knees, and neck. After the assault, he left her naked and defenseless on the floor, proceeding to sleep in another room.

On 04/04/2024 around 07:00 hours, Kashaija discovered his wife deceased. He informed his daughter, Tushabomwe Emily, who then alerted others, including Twinamatsiko Phenehansi, leading to a police report. The crime scene was visited, examined, and documented, with statements recorded from relevant witnesses. Additionally, black gumboots and the piece of timber used in the assault were recovered as evidence.

The suspect was apprehended, and the deceased’s body was transferred to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for postmortem examination.
