Pupil Killed, Four Injured After School Wall Collapses in Rukungiri
One child has died and four others were injured after a violent storm struck Rwerere SDA Nursery and Primary School in Rwerere Town Council, Rukungiri District.
The deceased has been identified as 12-year-old Ashaba Princess. The injured pupils are Abisinguza Emmanuel (8), Azahura Treasure (7), Ainembabazi Mercy (10), and Mugarura Onesmus (8), all learners at the same school.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the incident occurred on April 16, 2026, at around 1:30 pm during the lunch break. A strong windstorm reportedly brought down one of the school building’s walls, which collapsed onto the pupils as they ate from the verandah.
The children were rescued and rushed to a nearby private clinic. However, Ashaba Princess died on the way to the hospital.
Police were later notified and opened a death inquiry file. Officers visited and documented the scene, and the body was taken to Buyanja Health Centre IV for a post-mortem examination. The injured pupils were referred to Kambuga Hospital for treatment.
Preliminary reports indicate that the collapsed structure had weak walls. Authorities say the incident should serve as a warning to schools with similar structures to ensure the safety of learners.
