Nwoya Accident Leaves Seven Dead, 16 Injured

Seven people have died, and several others are nursing injuries following a road crash that occurred in the early hours of Monday, 4th May 2026.

The crash happened at about 1:15 a.m. at Lamwok Noi Village in Nwoya District. It involved motor vehicle registration number UBP 736U, an Isuzu bus belonging to Nailestar Coaches, driven by Abugo Mandella Kadin, who is currently in police custody, and motor vehicle registration number SSD 040A/SSD 498C, a Benz Actros trailer.

According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver, who was travelling from Arua, attempted to overtake two buses ahead of him. In the process, he collided head-on with an oncoming trailer.

As a result, four passengers died instantly at the scene, while 16 others sustained injuries and were rushed to Anaka Hospital for treatment.

However, three additional victims later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to seven. Eyewitnesses who were aboard the bus reported that the driver had been driving recklessly throughout the journey.

Kananura added that passengers had raised concerns about the driver’s conduct, but the conductor allegedly responded rudely instead of addressing the situation.

He urged the public to make use of police toll-free lines, WhatsApp numbers, and social media platforms to report reckless behaviour, noting that those who have done so have received timely assistance.

Meanwhile, several other crashes resulting in injuries and fatalities were recorded in the previous week, largely attributed to careless overtaking.

According to the Police Annual Crime Report 2025, careless overtaking and speeding accounted for 42% of all road crashes.

“Most of these crashes occur at night when visibility is poor. Careless overtaking remains one of the leading causes of road accidents, and avoiding it comes down to discipline, awareness, and patience,” Kananura said.
