Mother Arrested in Kamuli Over Suspected Infanticide

Police in Kamuli have arrested Mulungi Zainabu, 21, a resident of Nalinaibi village in Nawanyago sub-county, Kamuli district, for allegedly killing and burying her one-year-old daughter, Kabawo Hadija. She is suspected of having buried the baby on Sunday, 9/03/2025.

ASP Kasadha Michael, the Regional Spokesperson Busoga North, says that suspicion arose among neighbors and relatives after they noticed the child’s absence for about two days. When asked about her daughter’s whereabouts, Mulungi claimed she had taken the child to the hospital and was going to check on her.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Mulungi left home and remained absent until yesterday (Saturday, 15/3/2025), when she was arrested in Kamuli Municipality.

According to ASP Kasadha, on Friday, March 14, 2025, at around 9:00 pm, family members noticed a foul smell, prompting them to search the area. They discovered a suspected grave and, after involving the local chairperson, confirmed it was the child’s burial site. The matter was then reported to the police.

Investigations have revealed that Kabawo Asuman, the suspect’s husband, was away attending to his other home in Mbulamuti at the time of the incident. Before he left, the child had fallen ill, and both parents had sought medical attention. He was later shocked to learn of the child’s death.

The police spokesperson told reporters that a team of detectives visited the scene, recovered the body, and transported it to Kamuli General Hospital for a postmortem.

Further investigations are ongoing to establish more details.

Kasadha commended members of the public for their vigilance and for promptly sharing information that led to the suspect’s arrest.
