Bishop Barham University student drowns in Lake Bunyonyi while visiting grandmother

Police in Kabale is investigating a death by drowning of an 18-year-old student of Bishop Barham University.

The deceased has been identified as Elizabeth Twebaze, a university student at Bishop Barham Kabale and resident of Kabale township.

Twebaze was visiting her maternal grandmother at Kagasha village Kitoma parish Rubaya sub county Kabale district, at the time of the incident.

According to Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate, it is alleged that on 18/08/2021 at around 14:00hrs, the victim together with her three other sisters left their grandmother’s place to go and wash clothes at Lake Bunyonyi.

However, the trio later decided to play by swimming in the water. Unfortunately, the deceased didn’t have knowledge of swimming, causing her to drown.

Her sisters tried to help, but Twebaze was already dead.

They later called for help and the police marine was also notified, retrieved the body, and took it to the grandmother’s home for burial.

Maate advised people around the lakes to always take water safety precautions very seriously, to avoid such incidents that claim the lives of innocent citizens.
