Angry Mob Kills Robbery Suspect in Kisoro

The territorial police in Kisoro District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 37-year-old Irankunda Desire, who had been charged with aggravated robbery.

According to police reports, Irankunda was lynched by an angry mob on the night of June 4, 2025, at around 10:00 PM in Bupfumfu Village, Rwaramba Parish, Nyakinama Sub-county, Kisoro District, shortly after escaping from hospital custody.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, said Irankunda was initially arrested on May 13, 2025, alongside five other suspects in connection with a case of aggravated robbery. On May 20, 2025, the group was transferred to Mbarara Central Police Station at the request of the Flying Squad Unit for further investigation into related robbery incidents in the western region.

They were returned to Kisoro on May 29, 2025. However, Irankunda reportedly developed health complications and was admitted to the Kisoro Police Health Centre. His condition worsened, prompting a referral to Kisoro General Hospital on June 2, 2025.

Two officers were assigned to guard him: D/C Masereka Ronald (day shift) and D/C Musinguzi Alex (night shift). It is alleged that at around 9:00 PM on June 4, D/C Musinguzi reported that the suspect had escaped from the hospital.

Efforts to re-arrest Irankunda were ongoing when, later that same night, he was spotted by residents in Bupfumfu Village and fatally assaulted.

Maate confirmed that a case of murder by mob has been opened to aid investigations. Police visited and documented the crime scene, and the body was taken to Kisoro General Hospital for postmortem.
