Panic as ten suspects escape from police custody in Bukwo
Security forces are hunting for ten suspects who escaped from custody at Bukwo Police Station on Sunday night where they were locked up for various offences including murder and rape.
Three of the suspects are Ugandan nationals who live in Kenya and were picked up for murdering two Boda-boda riders. The trio had spent a month in the cells without appearing in court.
According to Barahukwa Mbabazi the Sipi Region Police Commander, the incident was unfortunate and the officer who was on duty will be arrested and charged with negligence.
“They are claiming there was too much rain the whole night but that is a lame excuse because someone definitely opened for the suspects,” he said.
Mbabazi said he has dispatched a team of crime intelligence officers and the Professional Standard Unit (PSU) to investigate the matter. Samuel Hashaka Mpimbaza, the Bukwo Resident District Commissioner says the escape of the suspects has exposed the police weakness in the district.
“This is terrible, I have learned that some of the suspects had stayed for one month in cells this is unacceptable,” he said.
