Rukungiri Woman Arrested for Stepson’s Murder as Kanungu Police probe Fatal Assault of Man

The police in Rukungiri have arrested a woman over the alleged murder of her stepson. The deceased is 16-year-old Erias Ahereza, a resident of Nyakagyera Cell, Burora Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District.

According to Maate Elly, the PRO of Kigezi Police Region, it is alleged that on an unknown date, Ninsiima Regisi, the stepmother of the deceased, assaulted and locked him in a room for at least a week until 19/08/2024.

It is further reported that at around 1600 hrs on the aforementioned date, the woman’s neighbor informed Aston Mutabazi, the area LC1 chairperson, about the incident. The chairman immediately intervened and took the deceased to Kebisoni Health Centre for medical attention. He was later referred to Kisiizi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on 20/08/2024 at around 1700 hrs.

Maate says the police of Kiyenje were alerted, and a case of murder was registered. The crime scene was examined and documented, and the body was taken to Rwakabengo HC III mortuary for a post-mortem. The suspect was arrested, and inquiries are ongoing to establish the motive behind the child’s torture.

In a separate incident,

The police in Kanungu are investigating the circumstances under which a 43-year-old man, identified as Tushabomwe Javira, was allegedly assaulted and died instantly. The deceased was a resident of Kishunju Cell, Nyakatunguru Ward, Kihihi Town Council, Kanungu District. It is reported that he was assaulted by Tumuheirwe Fomia, a woman friend from the same address.

It is alleged that on the night of 15/08/2024, the victim, who was staying with the suspect as a woman friend, had a fight, and the suspect critically injured him on the head. However, the victim did not report the matter to the police or local leaders and decided to stay indoors.

On 18/08/2024, at about midday, the LC1 chairman of Kishunju Cell learned that the victim was unwell. Upon checking, he found the victim in critical condition and took him to the police. At the police station, the victim reported that his woman friend was responsible for his injuries but couldn’t explain further. He was then rushed to Kihihi Health Centre IV for treatment.

Unfortunately, he died on 21/08/2024, at around 1000 hrs, at the health centre after being referred to Kambuga Hospital. The police were notified, statements were recorded from witnesses, a post-mortem was conducted, and the suspect was arrested.
