Minister Odongo Jeje Receives Credentials of New FAO Representative to Uganda

Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships aimed at transforming the agricultural sector, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, received the credentials of the newly accredited Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative to Uganda, Mr Ezana Getahun Kassa.

The credentials ceremony, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused on Uganda’s agricultural priorities, climate resilience, food security, and the role of international cooperation in supporting sustainable development.

Welcoming Mr Kassa to Uganda, Hon. Odongo described agriculture as the backbone of Uganda’s economy and the main source of livelihood for millions of citizens. He noted that although the country is pursuing modernisation in the sector, the government remains committed to protecting indigenous knowledge and traditional farming practices that have sustained communities for generations.

The Minister also noted the increasing impact of climate change on agriculture, warning that unpredictable weather patterns continue to threaten food production and livelihoods. He stressed the importance of adopting balanced and inclusive approaches that combine innovation with cultural and social considerations.

Speaking on modern agricultural technologies, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Hon. Odongo said Uganda is open to innovation but must carefully assess such technologies within the country’s socio-economic and cultural context.

“Uganda seeks to improve productivity while safeguarding what is uniquely ours,” the Minister said, adding that partnerships with organizations such as FAO are essential in supporting the country’s agricultural transformation.

He further described Uganda’s equatorial climate as a strategic advantage that supports year-round agricultural production, despite the growing challenges posed by climate variability. He reiterated the government’s commitment to coordinated efforts across sectors to promote sustainable agriculture and strengthen resilience among farming communities.

In his remarks, Mr Kassa thanked the Government of Uganda for the warm welcome and reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to supporting the country’s development agenda. He praised Uganda’s agricultural potential and favourable climate, describing the country as an important partner in promoting regional food security.

Mr Kassa also emphasised that agriculture intersects with several sectors and ministries and requested support to engage widely across Government institutions beyond the Ministry of Agriculture.

Hon. Odongo welcomed the proposal and assured the FAO Representative that Uganda was ready to strengthen collaboration through established diplomatic and government coordination channels.
