King of Internet, Africell Group exits Ugandan Market

Africell Group has announced departure from the Ugandan market, after what they termed as a detailed assessment of the future of the company in Uganda.

The company has been in the market for 7 years, after buying from Orange. In a memo to all employees, Africell UG claims it strives to be a leader not only in terms of mobile serves but also in terms of community impact and digitally lead the transformation of society in Uganda, a country with a mature and competitive Telecoms sector.

“We believe that the opportunity to achieve this impact is increasingly limited. We have therefore taken the difficult decision to permanently end Africell UG operations in Uganda. The decision is being made in the long-term interests of the Ugandan telecoms sector” the letter from management reads.

The company whose last day of operations is October 7th, 2021, says all employees shall stop coming to work on 30th September. Also, packages have been made including salaries and unpaid work leave for the employees.

The Company is also not accepting any new customers but will use the remaining one month to help its current customers switch to other operators.

“After careful consideration, Africell Group has decided to leave Uganda and focus on other opportunities for social and commercial impact. Doing so is the most sustainable way to fulfill our mission to advance the African telecoms sector Although. Africell regrets the immediate impact this decision will have, we believe it is a justified long-term transition and we are closely supporting affected staff and customers” the letter further reads.

Africell has been known for its fast and relatively affordable internet as compared to other telecoms.
