Congolese nationals flee into Uganda as fighting between M23 rebels & FARDC soldiers intensifies

All security agencies have taken charge of the situation at the Bunagana border after several people were forced to flee fighting from the DRC.

Security agencies including the Uganda police force, Updf, intelligence services, with help from UNHCR among others are helping manage the situation.

Ip Elly Maate the PRO Kigezi says that between 0400hrs and 0600hrs, this morning, M23 a rebel outfit fighting in the Eastern part of Congo Sabinyo MTS Ranges in particular was engaged by FARDC forces specifically in areas of Runyonyi, Kyanzo, Bugusa, Kyengerero near Bunagana border (4km) all in the province of North Kivu.

The intensity of infighting has forced Congolese citizens to flee the country for their lives.

Maate however says the situation is under control and UNHCR has started ferrying Congolese to Nyakabande settlement camp.

The Uganda Redcross society says its officials are also on the ground offering help.
