President Museveni mourns Speaker Jacob Oulanya’s death
President Yoweri Museveni has on Sunday confirmed the passing of Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanya.
According to the President’s announcement, Oulanya died today Sunday 20th March 2022 at the age of 56.
Museveni says he received news of Oulanya’s death at 10:30 am but delayed to announce so as to give a chance to his children to be informed first.
He described the late Speaker as a great Cadre.
Over a month ago, the speaker was flown to Seatle in the USA on a chartered Uganda Airlines plane. The move attracted criticism from the citizenry.
Some members of the NUP living in the US took to the street to condemn the move by the government to charter a plane to fly the late speaker to the US, claiming that taxpayers’ money was being misused.
Oulanya served as the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda (2021 – 2022) but passed on 20th March 2022 in Seattle. He was elected to that position on 24 May 2021, after defeating the former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.
He served as Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan parliament, from May 2011 until May 2021.[3] Oulanyah was also a member of parliament representing the Omoro County constituency, Omoro District, Acholi sub-region, in Uganda’s Northern Region.
