Police probe near-death attack on LGBTQI+ rights defender in Kajjansi

The Kajjansi Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the assault and stabbing of Mr. Steven Kabuye by unknown assailants.

Mr. Kabuye, a 25-year-old employee of Coloured Voices Media Foundation located in Lukuli, Buziga, and a gay rights activist, was reportedly attacked at 7:30 am on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around Makandwa, Lumuli parish, Kajjansi Town Council, on his way to work.

SSP Patrick Onyango the PRO KMP says police detectives visited the victim at Namulundu Medical Centre in Bwebajja, where he received immediate first aid and was reported to be out of danger.

According to Mr. Kabuye, two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle, wearing helmets, approached him. The passenger jumped off and attacked him, specifically targeting his neck with a knife.

Kabuye managed to shield his neck with his right arm, resulting in a stab wound to his arm. Despite attempting to flee, the assailants chased and stabbed him in the stomach, and left Kabuye for dead. Local residents discovered the victim in this critical condition and transported him to the clinic.

At the clinic, the Onyango says police detectives recovered the knife as evidence.

Mr. Kabuye told detectives that he had been receiving threats since March 2023. Having travelled abroad in June 2023, he returned home in December 2023 for Christmas.

Onyango says investigation into this matter is ongoing.
