Detectives from Old Kampala Police have launched a manhunt for the assailants responsible for the attack on Pastor Alloysious Bugingo’s motor vehicle, resulting in the tragic death of his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy PRO KMP, told reporters on Wednesday morning that the incident happened at 9 pm on January 2nd, 2024. Unidentified assailants opened fire on Pastor Bugingo’s vehicle, registered as “PRAIZ GOD,” along Namungona, Zone 2, Kasubi, Rubaga Division, Kampala, at Bawalakata Junction along National Housing Road, before swiftly fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
Despite sustaining injuries during the attack, Owoyesigyire says that the Pastor managed to drive the vehicle to Mulago Hospital. Unfortunately, Muhumuza Richard succumbed to the assault and was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital. The pastor received treatment at Mulago and has since been discharged.
Owoyesigyire says that the detectives discovered signs of tampering with the scene upon their arrival. Eyewitness statements were recorded, and the deceased’s body was conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for postmortem examination. He added that the police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the assailants.
In a separate incident, in Nsangi, police officers were called to the home of former Kawempe MP Mubarak Munyagwa in Kimbejja Cell, Budo Ward, Kyengera Town Council, following an attack by thugs that left his security guard injured.
Owoyesigyire said that on January 3rd, 2024, around 3 am, Nsangi Police, led by the Division Police Commander, prevented assailants from gaining access to Munyagwa’s home. The timely reporting by the former MP and the rapid police response played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of life and property.
During the attack, the security guard, Benjamin Mpaka, sustained a head injury from a sharp object and was transported to Mulago for medical treatment. Fortunately, no one inside the residence was harmed.
Owoyesigyire revealed that K9 units were introduced to the scene, but their efforts were hampered by heavy rain downpours. He clarified that, contrary to misleading social media posts, no shooting occurred at Hon Munyagwa’s residence. The assailants were armed only with sharp objects. He commended Munyagwa for promptly reporting the incident, enabling the police to respond effectively and prevent further harm.
The police spokesperson added that one suspect attempting to flee the scene in a Datsun pick-up with registration number UAK 182A was apprehended and is currently in custody, aiding ongoing police investigations.
