Community in shock as 77 year old woman is strangled to death in Kanungu
Police detectives in Kanungu are probing the death of 77-year-old Teopista Tibabuza, a resident of Group Farm Cell in Kibiimbiri Parish, Kihihi Sub County, Kanungu District.
Tibabuza’s lifeless body was discovered in her bed by Pastor Tumugabe Gerald during a Monday fellowship visit on 20/11/2023 around midday. Pastor Tumugabe, finding her home locked and the compound untidy, called Tibabuza but received no response.
Concerned, he approached a neighbor, identified only as Peace, wife of Ndagije, who reported not having seen Tibabuza. Upon noticing a small opening at the back door, Tumugabe opened and found Tibabuza lifeless on her bed. The pastor, who had prayed for her the previous evening due to back pain, alerted neighbors.
It was revealed that she had recently sold a maize garden for an undisclosed amount, raising suspicion that the attackers sought the proceeds. John Mugisha, the deceased’s son-in-law, reported the incident to the police.
ASP Mate Elly, the PRO for Kigezi Region, says that upon police arrival, Tibabuza’s body was found on the left side of the bed, exhibiting a swollen eye and fresh scratches suggestive of strangulation. A post-mortem was conducted at the site, and the body was handed over to relatives for a proper burial.
Maate added that investigations are underway.
