30 year old Killed in Conveyor Belt Accident at Amudat Mining Site
The police in Amudat District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Magomu Baker, a 30-year-old casual worker at Evergrande Resource Mining Company LTD and a resident of Cheptakol village, Lokaales Subcounty, Amudat District. Magomu was killed by a conveyor machine while on duty on November 18, 2024, at around 4:00 a.m.
According to IP Longole Mike, the Acting PRO for Mt. Moroto/ASTU, preliminary findings reveal that Magomu was attending to the conveyor belt in the mine, clearing stones and sand to ensure its smooth operation. During the process, the spade he was using got stuck in the conveyor belt. As he struggled to retrieve it, the conveyor belt pulled him into the machine, causing severe injuries, including a deep cut to his right arm, extending beyond the armpit.
The machine’s danger alarm sounded, prompting the operator to stop it immediately. Upon inspection, Magomu was found trapped in the conveyor belt, already deceased. The operator alerted other workers, who managed to pull his body from the machine. They initially attempted to transport the body to Karita Health Center IV but were stopped by the supervisor, who reported the incident to Chepkararat Police Post.
A team of detectives from Amudat visited the scene of the accident and recorded statements from witnesses. Magomu’s body was later transported to Mbale City Mortuary, pending a postmortem examination.
