21-year-old man hangs self after public flogging

Residents of Obeny Village in Alemi parish in Ayer Sub County in Kole district are in shock after one of their own committed suicide by hanging.

21-year-old man Kenneth Ocen found dangling on a rope on around 3:00 pm on Friday afternoon inside an incomplete building near their homestead, days after being caned by his clan leaders for excessive alcohol consumption and smoking marijuana. 

According to Tom Ebonga the Obeny Village LC I Chairperson, Ocen and his brother, Musa Ogwang were caned by members of Atek-Opao-Yat clan following complaints by their parents that they had joined bad groups involved in excessive alcohol consumption and marijuana smoking.

Ebonga adds that after being punished by the clan leaders, the deceased kept telling his friends that he may end up taking his life because of persistent harassment by his step-mother.
Kole District Police Commander David Otabong, says the deceased’s body was handed to his relatives for burial since not much investigation is required into such incidents.
