Matthew Kanyamunyu Released After Serving Reduced Sentence For Kenneth Akena’s Killing

Kampala-based businessman Matthew Kanyamunyu has been set free from incarceration after completing his reduced sentence of five years for the fatal shooting of child rights activist Kenneth Akena.

In November 2020, Kanyamunyu was convicted of manslaughter, following a plea bargain with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which reduced his initial murder charge. He pleaded guilty, leading to a four-year sentence.

Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine confirmed Kanyamunyu’s release on Friday, stating that he had completed his term and was discharged for reintegration into society.

High Court Judge Stephen Mubiru considered mitigating factors, including Kanyamunyu’s status as a first-time offender, his immediate actions after the incident, and his remorseful behavior. Despite being sentenced to five years and one month, Kanyamunyu’s release date was brought forward to April 12, 2024, due to earned remission time.

Remission is granted to prisoners demonstrating exemplary behavior during their incarceration, and Kanyamunyu qualified for this benefit, leading to his early release.
