Masindi Grandmother Arrested for Allegedly Torturing 4-Year-Old Grandchild
Masindi police have arrested a 62-year-old woman for allegedly torturing her 4-year-old grandchild.
The incident was reported to Masindi Central Police Station on March 31, 2025. SP Julius Allan Hakiza, the PRO of the Albertine Region, identified the victim as Opakrwoth Kennedy, who sustained severe burns on both hands, allegedly inflicted by his grandmother, Ajelinda Ongera.
According to the report, Ongera accused the child of eating food meant for supper before severely beating him. The following morning, she allegedly forced the child’s hands into a fire, causing serious burns.
The victim was rescued by the suspect’s daughter-in-law, Nyirach Maureen, who took him to the women’s councilor of Chongoyoma village. The case was then reported to Masindi Police Station.
Ongera was arrested and is currently being held at Masindi CPS as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the victim has undergone a medical examination, and statements have been recorded from relevant witnesses.
“We urge everyone to provide loving care and protection to children. Torture is a serious crime punishable under Ugandan law. Let’s work together to prevent such incidents and ensure justice is served,” said SP Hakiza.
