Authorities release names of Kisoro Mudslide Victims

Authorities in Kisoro have released the names of the eight people killed by mudslides in Murora sub-county.

The incidents occurred in Biizi and Gihuyaga villages during heavy and prolonged downpours from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning.

According to Maate Elly the Kigezo police spokesperson, six bodies were discovered on Wednesday morning, while the others were found in the afternoon.

He identified the deceased as; Owamaria Gilades 25yrs, Tuyizere Jason 17yrs, Mucunguzi Gildasi 15yrs and Nyiranzara Provia 53yrs all residents of Biizi village, Chibumba parish in Murora sub-county, Kisoro District.

The others are; Yaturinze Junior 15yrs a resident of Bukerahe village, Tumuhimana Desire 11yrs a resident of Gitebe village, Kagyenzi parish, Kanaba sub-county, Uwineza Rachel 7yrs and resident of Kabyaza village, Karango parish and Kazungu Nelson 21yrs a resident of Gihunga village, Karago parish in Murora sub-county, Kisoro district.

Meanwhile, Sehene Daniel 49yrs and Nyirabwengye Hope escaped with injuries.

Hajji Shafique Ssekandi Kisoro Resident District Commissioner says that the victims were in their houses sleeping when the tragic incident occurred. He also said that a search has been suspended since both locals and authorities believe that no more people are still trapped in the mud.

Additionally, the mudslides have caused around ten other deaths in Rukiga and Rubanda districts.
