EC announces 14th January 2021 as Presidential election date

The independent electoral commission has announced 11th January 2021 as the day to elect a President and members of Parliament.

The acting spokesperson for electoral commission Paul Bukenya announced the date on Wednesday, one day after the conclusion of nomination exercise for presidential candidates that took place Monday and Tuesday at Kyambogo.

11 candidates including the incumbent Yoweri Museveni Tibuhabirwa Kaguta (NRM), were nominated to take part in the January election.

Other presidential candidates are; Henry Tumukunde (Indep), Mugisha Muntu Gregg (ANT), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (NUP), Nancy Kalembe (Indep), Fred Mwesigye (Indep), John Katumba (Indep), Willy Mayambala (Indep), Joseph Kabuleta (Indep) and Patrick Amuriat Oboi (FDC).


According to the terms released by the EC today, processions and public/mass rallies remain banned. This is in accordance with the measures and guidelines put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Now, candidates can organise campaign meetings with limited attendance of a maximum of 70 persons, in order to allow the 2-meters social distancing rule for the persons attending the meeting.
