Police swears to protect pregnant school girls

Uganda police has warned schools against discrimination and stigmatization of pregnant school girls following the announcement by UNEB allowing them to register for their final exams.

While addressing the press in Kampala on Monday, Fred Enanga the police spokesperson noted that all territorial commanders have been advised to take keen interest in the matter and ensure that girls are not discriminated.

“As the police we are warning the public and other stakeholders against acts of discrimination and stigmatization of pregnant girls in candidate classes. We want to warn the teachers, parents, fellow students and the public including neighborhoods against acts of discrimination of these girls” Enanga said.

He notes that the COVID-19 lockdown was burdensome for girls more than boys especially in unsupervised homes which made girls vulnerable to sexual abuse, pregnancies and child marriages.

Enanga added that even with new developments from UNEB allowing these girls to attend classes, there are concerns that girls with early pregnancies still face challenges of returning to school.

According to the police spokesperson, some girls have already indicated fears of being ridiculed and discriminated, while others are shy, with low self-esteem.

“We are calling upon all head teachers, parents, guardians, local councils and other stakeholders to ensure the girls are protected and continue to participate in class and extra activities. All our territorial commanders have been advised to take interest” Enanga added.

He promised that the police shall be available to protect the pregnant girls.
