25 Homes Burnt in Retaliation Over Alleged Witchcraft in Zombo
Police in Zombo District have launched an investigation into an arson attack that occurred on December 1, 2024, in Olyekopambu Village, Chana Parish, Paidha Sub-County. The attack destroyed 25 grass-thatched houses, allegedly as a retaliatory act following the death of a resident, Sunday Juma Kakura.
According to SP Asea Collins, the Police Spokesperson for the West Nile Region, preliminary findings suggest that some community members attribute Kakura’s death to alleged witchcraft involving his aunt, Adokorach Jeros.
The deceased was found unconscious in his house on November 26, 2024, and was taken to Goli Hospital for treatment. He was later referred to Nebbi General Hospital but was instead taken to a traditional healer due to prevailing superstitions. On December 1, 2024, he was reportedly left in the compound of his aunt, Jeros, where he passed away.
The attack is believed to have been carried out by individuals suspected to be members of Kakura’s maternal clan, who targeted Jeros’s family. The incident led to significant property destruction and the displacement of affected families.
SP Asea urged residents to remain calm, avoid retaliatory actions, and cooperate with authorities by providing information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the culprits. He stressed the importance of resolving disputes through legal channels while investigations continue.
