Alliance Française de Kampala To Empower Women Through Literature
As March, the month dedicated to celebrating women, draws to a close, Alliance Française de Kampala (AFK), a non-profit organization renowned for its French language education and cultural advocacy, has unveiled a pioneering initiative aimed at uplifting underprivileged women across Uganda through the power of literature.
This innovative program, spearheaded by the French Institute and Fond Mediatheque, promises a series of thought-provoking discussions centered on East African Feminist Literature, with a specific emphasis on engaging Ugandan communities.
Under the guidance of Laure Ginestet, the Lead Coordinator, the program will revolve around three pivotal themes crucial to the Ugandan context.
Titled “Afro-Feminism, Sexism, and Sexual Violence alongside Health Education,” the event will navigate through pressing issues affecting women in Uganda.
Ginestet elaborated on the initiative’s outreach efforts, stating, “During the Afro-Feminism session, we will extend our reach to the marginalized women residing in the slums of Kampala and its environs. Collaborating with Minority Africa, we aim to delve into avenues of expression such as poetry, particularly with women from the Kamwokya slums.”
Subsequent sessions of the program will delve into the realms of Sexism and Sexual Violence, with a particular focus on women in the Adjumani refugee camp in West Nile.
“We are committed to amplifying the voices of women in marginalized communities,” affirmed Ginestet, highlighting the program’s dedication to fostering dialogue and empowerment among Uganda’s underprivileged women.
