UBF Launches Project to Introduce Bioplastics for Environmental Sustainability
The Uganda Biodiversity Fund (UBF) launched the “Clean Products for the Environment Project (CPE)” on Wednesday, aiming to drive significant change in plastic products and consumption by introducing bioplastics.
Bioplastics, derived from renewable sources, are biodegradable materials that can help alleviate the plastic waste crisis affecting the planet and polluting the environment.
Ivan Amanigaruhanga, the Executive Director of UBF, said that the pilot project, lasting two years, has secured funding of USD 120,000. UBF collaborates with various partners, including government regulatory agencies (NEMA & UNBS) and plastic manufacturers.
During the launch at their Kabalagala offices, Mr. Amanigaruhanga announced that they have signed an MOU with Luuka plastic manufacturers to supply them with polymer for transforming plastic manufacturing processes at their various factories.
He added that they are starting with only one company, Luuka on the side of manufacturers, because it is still a pilot and the funds are not available. However, they hope to raise at least USD10 million to help cover the entire country.
Ampaire Alex Makumbi, representing Green Wheel Afrika Holdings Limited, mentions that bioplastics have been successfully utilized in countries such as Russia and India, among others, and they believe it will also be beneficial for Uganda.
He argues that it will address environmental degradation by introducing an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bags (kaveera).
Mr Makumbi explained that the technology and the initiative is very expensive and that it was very difficult to secure funding.
Ms. Meg Hilbert Jaquay, the Managing Director of Jakana Foods LTD, expressed excitement about partnering with UBF, as this technology has long been requested by their customers.
