24 students of St. Andrews SS, Moyo arrested over violent strike, one shot in the arm
Police in Moyo district has arrested 24 students of St. Andrews SS for spearheading a strike that happened on Sunday night.
It is alleged that the students requested the school administration to allow them to dance on women’s day, but this was denied.
In the night, the students started throwing stones at the buildings and breaking glasses.
Police were tipped immediately to contain the situation. They shot some bullets in the air to stop the violence.
SP Angucia Josephine PRO West Nile/North West Nile Regions says that some minor destructions were already done but police arrived in the shortest time.
Six ring leaders were also picked up to record statements on Monday morning and later released to go home with the rest of the students. However, 18 others were later picked up, bringing the number to 24.
Meanwhile, one student identified as Anyovi Emmanuel from S.3 was hit by a stray bullet on the collarbone of his right arm but has been rushed to Moyo main hospital.
On Monday morning, David Modo the RDC Moyo convened an urgent security meeting with the school management, from where it was decided that all the students be suspended to go home in order to pave way for investigations as well as organize a meeting with parents for the way forward.
The police are currently maintaining deployment at the school as inquiries continue into the matter.
