Police have arrested a woman in Nabweru for torturing her 4-year-old stepdaughter to death. The deceased has been identified as Nakidde Josephine 4 years who was killed by her stepmother identified as Nabukenya Sarah.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says a postmortem done on the child’s body indicated that she had died from torture. Police have since arrested Nabukenya and she is being charged with torture and murder.
Meanwhile, four people died after committing suicide in the last week. Enanga says the cases of suicide have increased to a worrying number.
He noted that most cases arise from divorce, separation of couples, and lack of belonging especially after being released from prison. According to Enanga, they registered a case of a former convict who committed suicide due to stigma after leaving jail.
Last week’s cases include suicide by poisoning of a university student at Maguju cell, where Muhindo Innocent a 23-year-old law student at Uganda Pentecostal University in Fort portal committed suicide by poison.
Police recovered the suicide notes left behind by the deceased and samples of the poison.
Another incident was a suicide by hanging of Byarugaba Dennis at Keitamba village in Kabarole district. Byarugaba is the former convict who had just returned from Katojo prison where he had been sentenced for theft of a TV set.
He was not welcomed back into the area and had accumulated some debts, forcing him to hang himself.
Meanwhile, in Namayingo district, there was a case of attempted murder and suicide. This was after one Mukisa Steven separated from his wife Abarasa Christine and she returned to her parents’ home.
Mukisa went under the guise of visiting his wife and stabbed her twice in the neck before running away. Thinking that he had killed her, Mukisa decided to commit suicide by hanging to escape the consequences.
Christine is still nursing the injuries from the attack.
