Uganda Celebrates Francophonie Month with Cultural and Educational Festivities

Throughout March, Uganda will immerse itself in the celebration of the French language and Francophone culture with a lineup of engaging events organized by various stakeholders. The Embassy of France, in collaboration with its partners, is spearheading the initiative to foster cultural exchange and emphasize the increasing significance of French in Uganda.

The festivities officially commenced at Alliance Française Kampala (AFK), setting the stage for a month filled with diverse cultural activities across the country. Speaking at the launch, Cyril Maman, Head of Cooperation and Cultural Affairs at the Embassy of France, highlighted that Francophonie Month extends beyond celebrating the French language—it is about recognizing a global community of over 320 million French speakers across five continents.

“Francophonie is not just about France; it represents a vast and diverse linguistic community worldwide. While English and Swahili dominate in Uganda, the relevance of French continues to grow, offering opportunities in regional trade and international relations,” Maman remarked.

Eric Touze, Director of Alliance Française Kampala, expressed appreciation for the month-long festivities, describing them as a valuable platform for cultural exchange and a boost to French language promotion in Uganda.

A series of events have been lined up, kicking off on March 1st with “Apéro Francophone,” an interactive gathering hosted by AFK in Kampala. Other highlights include:

  • March 7: Njogera Française Interschool Competitions, where outstanding French students and teachers will be recognized.
  • March 8-11: Entertainment activities in schools, coordinated by the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda (APFO).
  • March 15: A job and study fair showcasing opportunities for students and professionals interested in the Francophone world.
  • March 22: Francophone Festival at the International French School in Kampala, spotlighting food, culture, and fashion.
  • March 27: The grand finale—a Francophonie Concert at AFK, bringing together artists and enthusiasts for a vibrant celebration.

Agatha Tumwine, President of APFO, underscored the significance of Francophonie Month for both students and educators. She emphasized that the extensive lineup of 18 events provides a unique opportunity for learners to practice their French through activities such as poetry, drama, music, and dance, which also enhance their personal and professional development.

“Uganda, though an Anglophone country, continues to see growing interest in French. This month offers students a chance to come together, interact, and improve their language skills through creative and engaging experiences,” Tumwine stated.

With all events being free and open to the public, Francophonie Month is set to not only celebrate language but also strengthen Uganda’s cultural ties with the Francophone world.
