Two Suspects Arrested for Murder of Tanzanian Fishermen on Lake Victoria
The police in Kalangala have arrested two suspects believed to have taken part in the murder of two Tanzanian fishermen on Lake Victoria before stealing their property.
The incident was reported by Julius Owithy, a 22-year-old Tanzanian fisherman and resident of Butujja, Mwanza, Tanzania.
The suspects have been identified as Kabuye Bosco (21 years old) and Kateregga Jackson (25 years old), both residents of Nkose, Katooke in Mazinga Sub-county, Kalangala District. Another suspect, only identified as Kaweesi, a member of the same gang, is still at large.
The deceased have been identified as Dadi and Zaakayo, both fishermen from Butujja, Mwanza, Tanzania.
According to Twaha Kasirye, the PRO of the Greater Masaka Region, it is alleged that on February 12 at around 10:00 AM, while fishing on Lake Victoria, Owithy and his colleagues were attacked by three unidentified men armed with pangas, who threatened to cut them.
The attackers then forcefully drowned two fishermen before stealing all their fish and fuel.
A case of aggravated robbery was registered at Nkose and later at Kalangala Police Station. Kasirye stated that statements have been recorded from relevant witnesses to aid in the investigation.
During the operation to arrest the suspects, four pangas were recovered. Kasirye added that the police marine unit is working around the clock to retrieve the bodies of the deceased.
