Tragic Accident in Bugiri Claims 10 Lives

The Bugiri territorial traffic police are investigating an accident that resulted in the deaths of 10 people on 11/03/2024 around 07:50 pm. The incident occurred at Kibimbi after the bridge along the Iganga-Tororo highway in Bugiri District.

SP Kananura Michael, the PRO Traffic, says that initial findings suggest that six motor vehicles were all traveling in the same direction towards Tororo, with the exception of one vehicle, registered as KAE 254c/ZA 5971, a tanker carrying molasses, which was headed in the opposite direction towards Iganga.

A Toyota HiAce registration number UAW 963m attempted to overtake the line of vehicles mentioned earlier, but the driver spotted an oncoming vehicle and veered left to avoid it, unaware that it was a trailer tanker loaded with molasses and towing another trailer.

As a result, the rear portion of the trailer collided with the taxi, causing it to be crushed between another trailer, KBJ 155c/ZD 2621, a Mercedes Benz. Subsequently, the trailer tanker lost control, overturned, and caught fire.

Unfortunately, 10 individuals lost their lives on the scene, including 8 passengers of the taxi, the taxi driver, and the driver of the trailer tanker. Upon receiving the report, the traffic police responded immediately to the accident site, and the deceased were transported to Bugiri Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Kananura expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that investigations into the accident are ongoing.
